National Western Stock Show 2014

For the last 4 years we have been taking the kiddos to the National Western Stock Show. Every January.  And every year everyone has a blast!

We scored big time this year and got tickets to the pro-rodeo for $8.50!  We always like going to the rodeo as well as walking around the grounds, so this was awesome!  Tickets to the rodeo for cheaper than they sell them for just grounds admissions.

Anyways, no one really cares about that right....you want to hear about the fun of the day.

Paul took a half day from work and we went to the 1:30pm Pro-Rodeo show.  There we saw bareback and saddle bronc riders.  Calf-wrestling....

**side story** After a few of the cowboys went and were able to get the calf down, Braden turned to me with extremely sad puppy eyes and said "Mom, I don't like this part.  They are hurting the cows."  I just had to laugh because I know for a 100% fact that when I was about 9 or 10 and my parents took me and my sisters to the rodeo I said THE EXACT SAME THING! It was adorable and cute and sad all at the same time.

...calf roping (not sure what this is officially called where they lasso and tie the calf's feet), BULL FIGHTING (so cool! We have never seen this before), kids mutton busting, house barrel riding, the Westernaires (a group of Colorado horseback riders), and the grand finally...BUCKING BULLS!

The boys sat and watched the whole 2 hour show without even budging!  Mommy and Daddy enjoy it too!  At the beginning they always turn the lights off and do a little fireworks show.  As soon as the lights turned off Braden and Zachary instantly covered their ears because they knew what was coming.  They also enjoyed watching all the cowboys and rodeo clowns fighting and dodging the bulls.

After the rodeo we wondered around the grounds some.  We caught a little bit of the heifer show, walked through the livestock area, went to the petting farm, learned a little bit about agriculture and local farming....then....we went and entered Braden's name in for a drawing at a chance to go Mutton Busting.

In order for the kids to go at one of the rodeos you had to enter your name into a drawing, by mail, before last November....next year I'll know.  This year, I didn't even think about it until a few weeks ago.  Whoops.  Mom fail.

Anyways, there is a "second chance" drawing for all the kids who didn't get to go during a rodeo to get a shot at going.  We threw our name in with the long shot of getting picked.  We had spent all week preparing Braden for when he didn't get called "don't be sad, we tried our best, we will get another chance to enter next year, etc. etc".

Well guess what.....HIS NAME WAS CALLED.  Incorrectly about 4 or 5 times throughout the night, but there was no way there was a "Brandon Schf-ler Bell" who entered his name in too.  He was sooooooo excited! I wish I got his reaction when they called his name on film too.  Being the Type A mom I am, the camera and video camera were charged up and in the stroller ready to go.  Just. In. Case. ;-)

Paul was able to go into the rink with him, while Zach, Chase, and I watched and filmed from the railing.  He did some warmups with a few of the Miss Rodeo Princess and Queens from around the nation, suited up and got ready to go.  He lasted maybe 3.2 seconds (from when the gate started opening to when his whole body fell off), but boy, was it the greatest 3.2 seconds of his short life so far!!!

Enough talking though, here is a little video I clipped together.

Hopefully this does not set us up for failure in future years (in case he never gets picked to go again).  But he had so much fun this year!!!! 78 Points on his first ride!  We just might have a little rodeo cowboy on our hands if we move down to Texas this year ;-)

Happy weekend y'all!  We've got a 10 month update on Bug coming up in the next few days, and a little review on a book I got from The Paleo Mom herself!!
